Congress is considering drastic cuts that would significantly harm children and families across the country. As part of its upcoming budget negotiations, lawmakers are proposing:
- Eliminating the Social Services Block Grant (SSBG)
- Slashing Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) by 10%
These two programs represent more than 25% of all federal child welfare funding -- support that families rely on every day. In FY2020 alone, SSBG and TANF helped cover:
- Childcare and after-school programs
- Support for relatives and grandparents raising children
- Economic assistance for struggling families
- Counseling and post-adoption services
- Salaries for preventive and protective service workers
Without this funding, entire systems will collapse. State and local agencies would be forced to make painful cuts – leaving more children vulnerable and families with no place to turn.
We can’t let that happen. Please email your Congressional representatives today and urge them to protect SSBG and TANF from these harmful cuts.
Children and families are counting on us – let's make sure their voices are heard.
